PRIDE CELEBRITY ELECTRIC 3-WHEEL SCOOTER: RULES FOR SAFE USE

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
1. Do not operate the scooter without completely reading this manual.
2. Remove the key whenever getting on or getting off of the scooter. The key should also be removed whenever the scooter is not being driven. This eliminates the possibility of accidentally depressing the throttle control lever and potentially causing an accident.
3. Always fully insert both lock pins into their respective holes. The lock pins hold the front and rear scooter sections together and must be fully inserted whenever the scooter is assembled. If a lockpin becomes lost, contact your authorized Pride dealer for proper replacements. To avoid potential personal injury, do not attempt to substitute foreign objects for lost lock pins. Both locking can levers must always be placed in their locked position (fully rearward) whenever the scooter is assembled.
4. Do not exceed the specifications in this manual. Do not attempt to modify the scooter in any way that is not authorized by PRIDE HEALTH CARE, INC. This can cause the scooter to become unstable and increase the susceptibility to tipping which can potentially lead to personal injury. Any modification not authorized by PRIDE HEALTH CARE, INC may cause the scooter to malfunction, increase EMI and RFI susceptibility and shall void the warranty. We advise contacting your dealer if there are any questions after reading this manual.
5. Please keep both hands on the tiller and your feet on the floorboard at all times while operating the scooter. This greatly reduces the possibility for potential injury.
6. Be sure the seat is in a locked position at all times when riding the scooter. This will prevent the possibility of falling from the seat while in motion and incurring potential injury.
7. The scooter is designed to carry a single person. Do not carry passengers under any circumstances or the scooter will become unstable and possibly tip. Personal injury may also result.
8. ALWAYS GO STRAIGHT WHEN DRIVING UP AN INCLINE OR DOWN A HILL. This allows the front and rear wheels to climb up or go down together. Failure to comply with this rule can result in the tiller handle swinging from side to side and the scooter may overturn. Personal injury may also result.
9. Use extreme caution when driving on busy streets, in parking lots or in shopping malls.
10. Do not operate or store the scooter when it may be exposed to inclement weather conditions such as rain, snow, mist, and below-freezing temperatures (such as storage on an outside car/van lift). Attempting to operate the scooter in such conditions can damage the electronics and potentially result in loss of control.
11. Use caution when driving near raised surfaces or unprotected ledges or drop-off (curbs, porches, stairs, etc.)
12. Disconnect the batteries if you will not be using the scooter for more than 48 hours. To avoid potential injury, consult your physician or pharmacist if you are taking any medications(s) which may affect your ability to coherently operate the scooter. The scooter is a motorized vehicle that requires coherent mental judgment and unimpaired reflexes.
13. Do not operate the scooter under the influence of alcohol.
14. Be sure the tires are properly inflated (30 psi). This will insure that the scooter is operating at its peak performance and greatly improve your stability.
15. NEVER USE THE SCOOTER AS A SEAT IN A MOVING VEHICLE. The scooter is not designed to withstand the impact of an automobile accident. When transporting the scooter in a vehicle, be sure that the batteries are adequately secured.
16. If possible, avoid stopping on an incline. It is always best to stop on level, flat areas where there is no possibility of overturning or tipping of the scooter.
17. Do not expose the electronics to any type of moisture at any time (rain, snow, mist, or washing the scooter). Such exposure can damage the electronics. Never attempt to ride a scooter that has been exposed to moisture until it has dried thoroughly.
18. Do not operate a scooter in icy or slippery conditions. Such behavior can increase the possibility of an accident and personal injury may result.
19. Always protect batteries from freezing temperatures and ever charge a frozen battery. This will damage the battery and may cause personal injury. Attempting to charge a battery in freezing conditions does not prevent a battery from freezing.
20. THE FOLLOWING SAFETY PROCEDURES APPLY TO THE OPTIONAL POWER ELEVATING SEAT:
A. The Power Elevating Seat option is intended for use on a LEVEL SURFACE ONLY.
B. NEVER RAISE THE SEAT FROM ITS LOWEST POSITION ON AN INCLINED SURFACE. Failure to heed this warning may result in the scooter tipping over - potentially causing injury.
C. NEVER RAISE THE SEAT FROM ITS LOWEST POSITION WHEN OPERATING YOUR SCOOTER ON BUMPY OR UNEVEN SURFACES. Failure to heed this warning may result in the scooter tipping over - potentially causing injury.
D. Operate the scooter only on a flat level surface whenever the elevating seat is raised from its lowest position.
E. NEVER OPERATE THE POWER ELEVATING SEAT IN THE FREEWHEEL MODE.

PRIDE CELEBRITY ELECTRIC 3-WHEEL SCOOTER: OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

BEFORE OPERATING YOUR SCOOTER, PLEASE CHECK FOR THE FOLLOWING PROPER OPERATING CONDITIONS:
1. The batteries must be sitting flat within the battery well area.
2. Make sure the manual free-wheeling lever (located at the right rear of the scooter) is depressed into the "run" position and not lifted into the "freewheeling" position".
3. Position yourself comfortably in the seat, push the seat lock lever downward to unlock the seat lock and rotate until facing forward. Once the seat lock lever is released, it will lock securely in place.
4. Adjust the steering column to a comfortable position (see Tille Handle Adjustments section).
5. Fully insert the key into the switch located on the control console.
6. The control console battery meter should read "full" prior to operation. This gauge may dip slightly when the throttle control lever is depressed, therefore, it is advised to accurately read this meter while the scooter is in motion.
7. Always start with the speed control on a lower setting.
8. Grasp each of the handlebar grips and gently rest your thumbs against the throttle control lever.
9. Be sure your pathway is clear of people, pets and obstacles.
PLEASE NOTE: NEVER LEAVE THE FREE-WHEEL LEVER IN THE FREE-WHEEL POSITION (UP) UNLESS YOU ARE PUSHING THE SCOOTER.
After planning your direction, forward or reverse, slowly press your thumb against the throttle lever for the direction selected. The electric brake will automatically release and the scooter will smoothly accelerate to the pre-selected speed. Releasing the throttle lever will cause the scooter to decelerate and come to a complete stop. The electric brake is automatically engaged when the scooter comes to a stop.
The rear wheel drive transaxle will give you maximum traction with minimal steering effort. Pulling on the right handle grip will turn the scooter to the right. Pulling on the left handle grip will turn the scooter to the left. To go straight, move the handlebars to the center position.

PRIDE CELEBRITY ELECTRIC 3-WHEEL SCOOTER: HELPFUL DRIVING HINTS

After beginning to use your scooter during your daily activities, you may encounter situations that, at first, may require some practice. With a little bit of patience, and practice, you will soon be able to achieve total control through doorways, elevators, up and down ramps and over grass and gravel.
As you approach a closed door, determine if it opens toward you or away from you. Unlatch the know or pushbar and allow the power of the scooter to pull or push open the door. If the door is self-closing you may quickly pass allowing the door to close behind you. If not, just stop when you are clear of the door and push it closed.
Modern elevators have a rubber door-edge safety mechanism which will re-open the door when pushed. If you are in the doorway when it closes, either push upon the rubber door-edge or allow it to contact the scooter and it will reopen. Carefully proceed and verify that pocketbooks or packages do not become caught in the door.
An increasing number of buildings have ramps for wheelchair and scooter access. There may be a turning switch-back in the middle of the ramp which may require proficient scooter cornering skills. Take wide swings, with your front wheels, around any tight corners so the back wheels will trace a wide arc and not short-cut the corner. When going down a ramp, it is best to keep your speed dial set to "slow" to insure a safely controlled descent.
Your Celebrity was designed for optimum stability under normal driving conditions - dry, level surfaces composed of concrete or asphalt. However, there may be certain times when you may need to travel on uneven terrain, such as an incline. SEE FIGURES: The figures below illustrate Celebrity 3 and 4 wheel stability under controlled testing conditions. The incline angle represents the most steep incline at which the Celebrity is stable. These tests were conducted with the seat in its highest position and adjusted backward on the seat base to its furthest rearward position.
Use this information as a guideline. Your ability to travel up inclines is affected by your weight, your speed, your approach, and your scooter setup. When you approach an incline, lean forward. This will shift your center of gravity forward. Should you feel the front wheels begin to leave the ground, release the throttle control lever, lower your speed control know, if possible, and gradually continue up the incline.

PRIDE CELEBRITY ELECTRIC 3-WHEEL SCOOTER: EMI-RFI

RADIO WAVES MAY INTERFERE WITH THE CONTROL OF POWERED WHEELCHAIRS AND MOTORIZED SCOOTERS.
This is to let you know that laboratory tests performed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have shown that radio waves can cause unintended motion of powered wheelchairs and motorized scooters. Radio wavers are a form of electromagnetic energy. When this energy unintentionally affects the operation of a device, it is called "electromagnetic interference" (EMI).
The following information summarizes what you should know about EMI. You may use this information to minimize the risk that EMI will effect your motorized scooter.
WHERE DO RADIO WAVES COME FROM? Radio waves are emitted from the antennas of cellular phones, mobile two-way radios (like walkie-talkies), radio stations, TV stations, amateur radio (HAM) transmitters, wireless computer links, microwave sources, and paging transmitters. Because electromagnetic (EM) energy is more intense closer to the transmitting antenna (source), the EM fields from two-way radios are of special concern.
IF MY MOTORIZED SCOOTER IS AFFECTED BY EMI, WHAT KING OF MOTION SHOULD I EXPECT? This is hard to predict. It would depend on a number of factors, including: the radio waves, the construction of the motorized scooter, whether it is on level ground or on a slope and whether it is in motion or still. The motion can behave erratically with the powered wheelchair or motorized scooter moving by itself or coming to a sudden stop. Furthermore, it is possible for EMI to unexpectedly release the brakes on a power wheelchair or motorized scooter. Some intense sources of EMI can even damage the control system of the powered wheelchair or motorized scooter.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO KNOW, FOR SURE, WHETHER RADIO WAVES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UNINTENDED MOTION OF MY POWERED WHEELCHAIR OR MOTORIZED SCOOTER? Unfortunately, interference from radio wave sources may be difficult to recognize, since the signals from these sources are invisible and may be intermittent. However, the FDA recommends that you report all incidents of unintended motion or brake release to the powered wheelchair or scooter manufacturer, and if possible, note whether there was a radio wave source nearby at the time of the incident.
HAS ANYONE BEEN HURT FROM ERRATIC, UNINTENDED MOTION OF POWERED WHEELCHAIRS OR MOTORIZED SCOOTERS? The FDA has reports of injuries that resulted from the uncontrolled motion of powered wheelchairs and motorized scooters, however, it is unclear how many of these incidents were actually accused by radio wave interference.
ARE ALL POWERED WHEELCHAIRS AND MOTORIZED SCOOTERS SUSCEPTIBLE TO EMI? Each make and model differs in its ability to resist electromagnetic interference. That is, each has a particular level of "immunity" to interference, measured in volts per meter (V/m). The higher the immunity level, the greater the protection. In other words, a motorized scooter with a high immunity level is less likely to be affected by a strong radio source than one with a low immunity level.
WHAT IS THE FDA DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM? The FDA has written to the manufacturers of powered wheelchairs and motorized scooters and requested them to test their new products to be sure that they provide a reasonable degree of immunity against EMI. The letter states that powered wheelchairs and motorized scooters should have an immunity of at least 20 V/m, which will provide a reasonable degree of protection against the common sources o EMI.
The FDA has also requested these manufacturers to clearly label their new products with the immunity level or to state that the immunity level is not known. The labeling and informational material supplied with the powered wheelchair or motorized scooter must explain what the immunity level means, and warn users about the possibility of EMI and how to avoid it. In addition, the FDA has recommended that manufacturers undertake an educational program to inform users of powered wheelchairs and motorized scooters, and their care givers, about the problems associated with eMI and actions that they can take to minimize the risk. The FDA has requested that manufacturers of motorized scooters implement these actions by 12/2/94.
WHAT CAN I DO TO FIND OUT IF MY POWERED WHEELCHAIR OR MOTORIZED SCOOTER IS LIKELY TO BE AFFECTED BY EMI? If you've had your power wheelchair or motorized scooter for a long time and haven't experienced any unintended motion, it's not likely that you'll have problems in the future. but it's always possible that problems could arise if you are close to a source of radio waves. Therefore, it is very important to be alert to this possibility.
If you want to find out how well your powered wheelchair or motorized scooter is protected against EMI, you can contact the manufacturer and ask about its immunity level.
WHAT CAN I DO TO REDUCE THE RISK THAT MY POWERED WHEELCHAIR OR MOTORIZED SCOOTER COULD BE AFFECTED BY EMI?
HERE ARE SOME PRECAUTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:
1. Do not turn On or use hand-held personal communications, devices, such as citizens band (CB) radios and cellular phones while the powered wheelchair or motorized scooter is ON.
2. Be aware of nearby transmitters, such as radio or TV stations and hand-held or mobile two-way radios, and try not to come close to them. For example, a powered wheelchair or motorized scooter with an immunity level of 20 V/m should stay at least three feet from a hand-held two-way radio and ten feet from a mobile two-way radio.
3. Be aware that adding accessories and/or components, or modifying the powered wheelchair or motorized scooter, may make it more susceptible to interference from radio wave sources. (Note: There is no easy way to evaluate their effect upon the overall immunity of the powered wheelchair or motorized scooter).
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY POWERED WHEELCHAIR OR MOTORIZED SCOOTER MOVES UNEXPECTEDLY?
If unintended motion or brake release occurs, turn the powered wheelchair or motorized scooter OFF as soon as it is safe.
NOTE: DO NOT DRIVE YOUR SCOOTER DURING AN ELECTRICAL STORM. EMI CAN BE GENERATED BY LIGHTNING AND CAUSE YOUR SCOOTER TO MOVE ERRATICALLY.
IF MY POWERED WHEELCHAIR OR MOTORIZED SCOOTER MOVES UNEXPECTEDLY, WHERE SHOULD I REPORT THIS? Call Pride Health care, Inc. at (717) 655-5574 to report the incident and to ask for information about the FDA Med watch problem reporting program.

PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4000 3-WHEEL AND PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4400 4-WHEEL: REAR ANTI-TIP WHEELS

The anti-tip wheels are a vital safety feature of your scooter. Never remove the anti-tip wheels. They prevent the scooter from tipping backward on an incline.

PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4000 3-WHEEL AND PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4400 4-WHEEL: CONTROL CONSOLE FUNCTIONS

BATTERY METER: The console mete will give you an approximate indication of your battery strength. Just as an automobile gas gauge is only functional when the car is running, the battery meter will only read accurately when the scooter is in motion.
HORN SWITCH: With the key inserted, depressing the horn switch will activate a warning horn. Do not hesitate to use the horn whenever necessary.
SPEED ADJUSTMENT DIAL: This allows you to pre-select a desired top speed. Start at a lower speed until you gain confidence with the controls. The speed selected here will be varied by the throttle control lever. Halfway on the speed dial will supply half of the power to the throttle lever. A full clockwise rotation on the speed dial will offer a full range of speeds to the throttle lever.
THROTTLE CONTROL LEVER: Located under the console, your forward and reverse speed is controlled here. Pushing the throttle control lever inward with the right thumb (or pulling toward with the left hand) will release the brakes and initiate forward movement. Pushing the throttle control lever inward with the left thumb (or pulling toward with the right hand) will release the brakes and initiate reverse movement. The speed supplied by the speed adjustment dial is varied by the amount of pressure applied to the throttle control lever. When released, the throttle lever will return itself to the center position and you will gently stop.
KEY SWITCH: To turn the scooter "ON", fully insert the key. To turn the scooter "OFF", simply pull the key out.
KEEP THE CONSOLE FREE FROM ANY TYPE OF MOISTURE. IN THE EVENT THAT THE CONSOLE BECOMES EXPOSED TO ANY TYPE OF MOISTURE, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THE SCOOTER UNTIL IT HAS BEEN DRIED THOROUGHLY.
OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES: FOR INFORMATION about a full selection of optional accessories, such as body light packages, power seats, special seating, baskets, cane holders, crutch holders, flat, oxygen holders, and canopies, please contact your authorized dealer.
Controls for optional accessories are located on the lower part of the tiller shroud above the tiller tilt locking lever.
LIFT SWITCH (OPTIONAL): Depressing the switch will activate the optional headlight.
POWER SEAT SWITCH (OPTIONAL): In the "drive" position the throttle control lever will perform as usual. In the "seat" position the throttle lever will raise and lower the optional power seat assemble.

  1. 1. The Power Elevating Seat option is intended for use on a LEVEL SURFACE ONLY.
  2. 2. NEVER raise the seat from its lowest position on an inclined surface. Failure to heed this warning may result in the scooter tipping over - potentially causing injury.
  3. 3. NEVER raise the seat from its lowest position when operating your scooter or bumpy or uneven surfaces. Failure to heed this warning may result in the scooter tipping over - potentially causing injury.
  4. 4. Operate the scooter only on a flat level surface whenever the elevating seat is raised from its lowest position.
  5. 5, NEVER operate the power elevating seat in the freewheel mode.

PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4000 3-WHEEL AND PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4400 4-WHEEL: ELECTRONICS MODULE AND SAFETY FEATURES

The electronics module is located in the rear of the scooter under the stroud. The shroud is secured in place by small hook and loop fastener strips.
MANUAL FREEWHEELING: When you wish to push your scooter for short distances, it can be placed in manual freewheeling mode. On the end of the motor assembly (right rear of the scooter) is the manual freewheeling lever (see FIGURE P). Whenever this lever is pulled upward, the drive system is disabled and the scooter can be pushed freely. Also, the motor is electrically disengaged from the control box and will not run when the throttle lever is depressed.
ON BOARD BATTERY CHARGER: In the lower left corner of the electronics tray is the battery charger. This is a silver metal box with cooling fins on the outside. The main power cord extends from the charger and should be coiled to the side of the trunk.
ELECTRONIC CONTROLLER ASSEMBLY: The controller assembly, or brain, is found in the right side of the electronics module in the rear section of the scooter. This box receives directions from the control console (located on the handlebars) and sends power to the motor or brakes as needed. On the cover of the controller assembly is the charging ammeter which is used when recharging the batteries.
KEEP THE ELECTRONIC CONTROLLER ASSEMBLY FREE FROM ANY TYPE OF MOISTURE. IN THE EVENT THAT THE ELECTRONICS BECOME EXPOSED TO ANY TYPE OF MOISTURE, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THE SCOOTER UNTIL IT HAS BEEN DRIED THOROUGHLY.
MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER: The main circuit breaker is mounted to the side of the controller cover. When it is triggered, it will visibly pop out. When this circuit breaker is tripped, it will shut off the entire scooter unit it is pushed back in to reset it.
When the batteries are low in power and the scooter is heavily strained (excessive loads or sharp inclines) the main circuit breaker might trip to protect the motor and electronics from damage. To restore operation, first, allow a minute or so for the unit to rest. Then, push the circuit breaker button to reset it. You may wish to charge the batteries more frequently and have a dealer or service station perform a "50 amp load test" upon the batteries to determine how viable they are. If the main circuit breaker continues to trip, you should see your dealer for service.
PLEASE NOTE: Caution should be exercised when storing personal items in the electronics module to assure that the charger and its power cord do not become damaged. Please also be aware that the battery charger could warm up during battery charging.
CHARGE METER: The charge meter located upon the controller cover indicates the amount of charging correct accepted by the battery as it is charging. As your battery voltage increases, your meter current indication decreases. As it approaches zero, your batteries approach a full charge.

PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4000 3-WHEEL AND PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4400 4-WHEEL: BATTERIES AND BATTERY CHARGING

BATTERY CHARGING INSTRUCTIONS: Your scooter has two long-lasting 12 volt deep cycle batteries which are sealed and maintenance free. They are recharged by an onboard 3 1/2 amp charging system for your ease and convenience.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO SAFELY CHARGE YOUR BATTERIES:

  1. 1. Position your scooter close to a standard wall outlet.
  2. 2. Remove the key from the control console.
  3. 3. Extend the charger power cord and plug it into the wall outlet.
  4. 4. It is recommended to charge your batteries for 8 to 14 hours. As the batteries charge, the battery condition meter will approach the 100% mark. This can be checked by periodically inserting the key.
  5. 5. When fully charged, unplug the power cord and replace it in the rear shroud for future use.

HOW DOES THE CHARGER WORK? When the battery voltage is low, the charger works extra hard to bring up the battery charge. As the battery voltage approaches a full charge, the charger doesn't work as hard to complete the charging cycle. When the battery is fully charged, the amperage from the charger is near zero, thus (when plugged in) the charger maintains the battery without overcharging it.
CAN I USE A DIFFERENT BATTERY CHARGER?
For maximum efficiency and consistent even charging of the batteries, we recommend simultaneous charging of both batteries by the supplied scooter charger. If you must use a different charger, we recommend battery chargers in the 3 to 5 amp range. Exceeding 10 amps will result in damaging heat. A 12 volt car charger may be used to charge each battery individually once the batteries are disconnected from the scooter. Remove the seat and rear shroud to expose the batteries. Unplug the battery harness from the electronics module and connect the external charger directly to the battery terminals red (+) to red (+), and black (-) to black (-).
HOW OFTEN MUST I CHARGE THE BATTERIES? Many factory come into play when deciding how often to charge the batteries. You may use your scooter all day on a daily basis or you may not use it for weeks at a time. Other factors such as driver and baggage weight, smooth or rough terrain, flat areas or inclines and speeds used must all be considered.
With these variables you should concern yourself with two questions: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHARGE AND FOR HOW LONG? The charger was designed so there is no way to overcharge the batteries! The only problem you may encounter would be not to charge your batteries on a regular basis. If you follow the guidelines below, your batteries will provide safe and reliable operation:
1. IF YOU USE YOUR SCOOTER AT ALL WITHIN A DAY: put it on the charger as soon as you are finished using it. The charger is fully automatic so it will not overcharge your batteries. Your scooter will be ready each morning to give you a full day of service. It is recommended that you charge the batteries 8 to 14 hours after daily use.
2. IF YOU USE YOUR SCOOTER INFREQUENTLY (once a week or less): you should charge it at least once per week for 12 to 14 hours. REMEMBER: Keep your batteries fully charged and avoid deeply discharging your batteries. Do not charge more than 24 hours.
HOW CAN I GET MAXIMUM RANGE OR DISTANCE PER CHARGE? Rarely do we have an ideal driving situation such as smooth, flat, hard terrain with no wind or curves. More often we are presented with hills, sidewalk cracks, uneven and loosely packed surfaces, curves and wind. These all will affect the distance or running time per battery charge. Here are a few suggestions for obtaining the maximum range per charge:

  1. 1. Always charge your batteries fully prior to your trip.
  2. 2. Maintain 30 lbs. pressure in the front tire(s) and 30 lbs. in the rear tires
  3. 3. Plan your trip in advance to avoid hills, cracks and broken or soft surfaces.
  4. 4. Limit your baggage weight to essential items. Avoid adding weight to the rear of the scooter. This will prevent uneven weight distribution and tipping backward.
  5. 5. Try to maintain an even speed to avoid stop and go driving
  6. 6. Avoid any excess weight to the rear of the seat. This will prevent uneven weight distribution and the possibility of the scooter tipping.

Your Pride scooter is equipped with one of two types of battery chargers. One type of charger has a black case; the other type has a silver-colored case. Below is a description of the LED function for both types of chargers:
BLACK-CASED CHARGER:

  1. 1. When you plug the charger power cord into a wall electrical outlet, the red LED will come on, indicating that the charger is plugged in and operating - delivering current to the batteries.
  2. 2. The green LED comes on and glows steadily when the batteries are at 90% of their full charge.
  3. 3. The steady green LED begins to flash off and on when the batteries are fully charged at 29 volts DC for approximately one hour.

SILVER-CASED CHARGER

  1. 1. When you plug the charger power cord into a wall electrical outlet, the red LED will come on, indicating that the charger is plugged in and operating - delivering current to the batteries.
  2. 2. The green LED comes on and glows steadily when the batteries are fully charged at 29 Volts DC for about one hour. (The green LED on this charger does not flash off and on).

NOTE: In some instances, the green LED may stay on after the charger has been unplugged from the wall outlet. This is not a charger malfunction. It is a normal condition of the charger that occurs because the green LED circuitry was designed to turn off the LED when the batteries reach 26 VDC. It may take a few minutes of scooter operation for the batteries to drain down their charge from 29 VDC to 26 DC, allowing the charger circuits to turn off the green LED.
WHAT TYPE OF BATTERY SHOULD I USE? We recommend "deep cycle" batteries that are maintenance free and sealed, eliminating the possibility of leakage. Both "Sealed Lead Acid" and "Gel Cell" are deep cycle batteries and are similar in performance. Do not use wet cell batteries! The charging of wet cell batteries produces hazardous flammable gases.
WHAT ARE MY BATTERY SPECIFICATIONS? These are the specifications used to reorder "deep cycle" baTTERIES:
Type: Deep cycle (Sealed Lead Acid)
Size: U1
Voltage: 12v each
Amperage: 31 A.H. (amp hour)
PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE CAPS FROM SEALED BATTERIES, WATER CANNOT BE ADDED TO SEALED BATTERIES. CAP REMOVAL WILL VOID THE WARRANTY AND CAUSE BATTERY DAMAGE.
WHY DO MY NEW BATTERIES SEEM WEAK? Deep cycle batteries employ a much different chemical technology than that used in car batteries, nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cads) or other common battery types. They are specifically designed to provide power, drain down charge and then accept a relatively quick recharge.
We worked closely with our battery manufacturer to provide a battery that best suits the specific demands of scooter applications. Fresh batteries arrive regularly and are promptly shipped with a full charge. During shipping, they may encounter temperature extremes that can influence their initial performance. Heat will rob the charge from the battery, cold will slow the power available and extend the time needed to recharge (just like a car battery).
A brand new battery can often act a little time for the temperature to stabilize and adjust to your room temperature. More importantly it will take a few "charging cycles" (a partial drain - then full recharge) to establish the critical chemical balance that is essential to the battery's peak performance and long life.
If you take the time to break-in your battery properly it will be worth it. REMEMBER: how long your battery will provide service is quite often a reflection of the care it receives. This is how to break-in your new battery:
1. Fully recharge any new battery prior to initial use. This will bring your battery up to about an 88% performance level.
2. Now let's have some fun! Slowly, run your scooter about the house and yard. Don't stray too far away until you have become accustomed to the controls, the feel of the scooter, and have actually broken-in the batteries.
3. Give the batteries another full charge of 8 to 14 hours and run the scooter again. The batteries will now perform to over 90% of their potential.
4. After four to five charging cycles, the batteries will top off at 100% charge and last for an extended period due to your patience and care in the first few days of operation.
HOW CAN I INSURE MAXIMUM BATTERY LIFE? A fully charged battery is a happy battery. A fully charged deep cycle battery will provide reliable performance and extended battery life, so keep your batteries fully charged whenever possible.
Please be warned, batteries that are regularly deeply discharged, infrequently charged, or stored without a full charge may be permanently damaged providing unreliable operation and limited life.
HOW SHOULD I STORE MY SCOOTER AND BATTERIES? If you do not use your scooter regularly, we recommend maintaining battery vitality by charging the batteries at least once per week.
If you plan on not using your scooter for an extended period, it is best to first fully charge the batteries prior to storage. Disconnect the battery harness from the rear electronics module connectors and store the unit in a warm, dry environment. Avoid temperature extremes, freezing conditions and never attempt to change a frozen battery. A cold battery should be warmed for several days prior to recharging.
If you are storing a scooter that has solid (foam filled) tires, you may wish to block the unit off the ground with several boards under the frame. This will keep the tires off the ground and prevent the possible development of flat spots on the tires.
WHAT ABOUT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION? Sealed Lead Acid and Gel Cell batteries are designed for application in wheelchairs and power scooters. They are FAA approved allowing safe transportation on aircraft, buses and trains because there is no danger of spillage or leakage. We suggest you contact the ticket counter in advance to determine the carrier's specific requirements.
If you wish to ship the scooter to your final destination by a freight company, repack the scooter in the original shipping container and ship your batteries in separate boxes. Only use Sealed Lead Acid or Gel Cell type batteries which are maintenance free. Do not use wet cell batteries in which the caps are removable.

PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4000 3-WHEEL AND PRIDE CELEBRITY SC-4400 4-WHEEL: CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Your scooter was designed to require a minimal amount of care and maintenance. Do not store the scooter where it is exposed to the weather.
Because this is a motorized vehicle, if you are in any doubt as to its care or operation, you may choose to periodically return the scooter to your dealer for inspection.
THE FOLLOWING AREAS REQUIRE PERIODIC INSPECTION AND/OR CARE AND MAINTENANCE:

  1. 1. TIRE PRESSURE: Inflate to 30 PSI in both front and rear tires. Do not exceed 30 PSI air pressure in any tire.
  2. 2. TIRE CONDITION AND TREAD WEAR: A rubber conditioner may be used on the tires.
  3. 3. OTHER EXPOSED SURFACES: Floor mats, bumpers and trim, for example, may also benefit from an occasional application of a rubber or vinyl conditioner. Do not use conditioner on a vinyl seat because it may become too slippery.
  4. 4. BATTERY TERMINAL CONNECTIONS: Be sure they remain tight and are not corroded. Batteries must sit flat within the battery well area, with the battery terminals facing the rear of the scooter.
  5. 5. WIRING HARNESSES: Check for insulation damage, especially the battery charger cord. If there is damage to the cord, it should be repaired or replaced prior to next use.
  6. 6. ABS PLASTIC SHROUDS: The shrouds have been sprayed with a clear sealant coating. They will retain their high gloss with a light application of car wax.
  7. 7. FRONT AXLE BEARINGS, REAR AXLE BEARINGS AND MOTOR/TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY: Are all pre-lubricated, sealed and require no subsequent lubrication.
  8. THE CONSOLE AND ELECTRONIC CONTROLLER ASSEMBLIES: Be sure to keep these area free from moisture. In the event that these components are exposed to moisture, let them dry thoroughly before attempting to operate.

When disassembling the front and rear halves, ALWAYS disconnect the 9-pin control cable and two battery harnesses first to avoid undue tension on the wiring.

CELEBRITY SCOOTERS SC-4000 AND CELEBRITY SCOOTERS SC-4400: BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING

Any electromechanical device will occasionally require maintenance but be assured that most problems are usually solved with a bit of common sense. Ask yourself what works and what doesn't. Try each and every control on the scooter to see if your problem follows any pattern. Is the whole scooter dead or just some of the operations?
WHAT IF: THE ENTIRE SCOOTER IS DEAD?

  1. Make sure the key is fully inserted.
  2. Verify that your batteries are fully charged.
  3. The control console is equipped with a timer that shuts the unit OFF whenever it has been idle for several minutes without any operation. Pull out the key, wait two seconds and reinsert the key again for normal operation.
  4. Push in to reset the main circuit breaker located on the controller (in the rear section of the scooter).
  5. Make sure both battery harnesses are firmly connected to the electronics module connectors and at the battery terminals.
  6. Verify that the front console control harness is firmly plugged into the rear connector mounted on the front side of the electronics module.

WHAT IF: THE UNIT IS DEAD AND THE BRAKES ARE RELEASED? The scooter was probably left in the manual freewheeling mode. When the freewheeling lever is pulled up the brakes are disengaged and all the power to the motor is cut. Push the lever down for normal operation.
WHAT IF: THE MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER REPEATEDLY TRIPS (located on the controller)?
1. Charge your batteries more frequently.
2. If this continues, have both batteries "50 amp load tested" by your authorized dealer or service station.
3. Check that foreign objects, such as rope or wire have not become jammed in the wheel assemblies.

WHAT IF: THE CONSOLE METER DIPS FAR DOWNWARD WHEN PRESSING THE THROTTLE CONTROL LEVER AND THE MOTOR SURGES AND/OR HESITATES?
1. Fully charge your batteries.
2. Have your dealer perform a "50 amp load test" of both batteries.
3. Have the two motor brushes cleaned and replaced if necessary.
If you experience any problems with your scooter that you are not able to solve, immediately contact your dealer for proper information, maintenance and service.
